When children get admission to coaching institutes, they get study material which mainly includes modules or what we call 'booklets'.
As their syllabus is vast, many times there is a requirement to refer to separate textbooks as well. Parents try their best and arrange the books for them.
Many times they ask the senior children of other friends who have completed their preparation to pass on the old books for their child.
We tell you when new books should be purchased -
1.Basic reference books
If a basic book is referred to by the teacher and needs to be done to complete the syllabus, it is better to buy that book. Students will use it for a complete 2 years and can write his/her notes in the book itself.
2.Previous year questions books
As a student needs to solve these questions, a pre-tick on an answer will spoil practice for these past questions. So it is preferable to buy these books.
3.Actual exam papers
Though these complete exam papers need to be practised a few months before exams, it is advisable to buy new books. A child can solve these papers at one go and no previous markings are beneficial for them.
4.NCERT books
Certain state board students need to study NCERT books separately apart from their own board textbooks. It is advisable to buy new books for this.
When old books can be arranged -
1.Secondary reference books
Certain higher level books are required to clear some concepts or study some theory part and in these cases old books can be taken from seniors.
2.Extra assignments
Certain extra modules or assignments can be taken from seniors for reference purposes.
3.Notes from classes
Notes from seniors can be taken for reference purposes. However, it’s important to remember that you should make your notes as well.
So try to understand that in certain cases such as practising and solving, new books are helpful and can enhance the preparation of a child as previous answers may bias the child and in certain cases such as reading theory, help from old material can be taken. We also assume that the cost for new books is not very high as it is a one-time investment!
