Why do some students lose motivation, and how to get it back?

Many students preparing for exams like JEE and NEET lose their motivation for multiple reasons, and their preparation suffers. In certain cases, students even stop preparing for that target exam and eventually go to the exams underprepared.

Some of the common reasons why students lose their motivation are:

  1. Students get intimidated - Many times, students get intimidated due to high-performers around them or bad results in some exams and then stop preparing because they feel that they would not be able to perform well afterwards.

While these exams are competitive and tough, with negative scoring systems, students can always improve their scores by focusing on understanding where they have made the mistakes and making sure they are clearing their doubts. They should try to beat their previous % scores in tests. Many times, an initial score of 30-40% in mock scores can be improved up to 50-60% with consistent efforts.

  1. Students find it demanding - As students transition from school life to coaching life in the 11th and 12th standard, they find it much more demanding because of homework, mock exams and competitive spirit. They feel that they are far behind despite putting in their best efforts and will not be able to cope.

It’s not like that. With the best planning, students can plan some lighter moments every day. They can reward themselves when they achieve a target number of questions daily. They can also set small goals such as going to play only once homework is complete and so on.

  1. Students don’t find a support system - The support system could be parents or friends, or even their mentors. In an environment where a student feels that no one is able to understand them, they feel low.

Students should approach teachers, mentors and parents when they feel a lack of motivation. They are always there to listen to them and help them out with concepts, health or anything else. Finding someone to share your thoughts and not lose hope is helpful.

  1. Students find it difficult to balance coaching and board studies - It is very important for you to understand which score is more important for you, the 12th board courses or the competitive exam courses. Many times students are not able to balance these two preparations as well and thus face problems while preparing for competitive exams.

Again, we suggest that you should prioritize college and coaching classes correctly and decide which of the two would be more helpful. The syllabus is similar except for optional subjects. So designing a good study plan for both preparations helps a lot. Help from teachers and mentors should be taken.

Preparing for competitive exams is like a marathon and not a sprint. Following some of the above steps is important and focusing on your goals to find your motivation. You should also talk to seniors or role models who have done it. Such people understand the struggles very well and always want you to succeed in all your ventures. They can help you well.
