What makes Engineering a popular, versatile and smart option in India?

In India, we have to choose our choice of career stream after Class X. And while many children are unsure of which stream to opt for, a majority of Indian parents prefer their children pursuing engineering as a career option. They feel it is a safe option for the children’s future and thus enrol them for JEE preparation.

During preparation, many children are confused about their career choices and feel the burden of JEE exam preparation. At times they even blame their parents for having signed them up for the pressure, hard work and consistency they need in order to prepare for JEE.

At Mentor and Mom, we think that even if you as a 10th standard child are not sure of what you want to pursue, engineering is such a versatile field that you will rarely regret choosing it.

Below, we mention some popular paths taken by engineers all across the country (IITians and non-IITians alike)

Option A: BE AN ENGINEER AND PURSUE ENGINEERING

1. Doing jobs in the respective core branches as engineers

While doing engineering, some students pursue jobs in their core field such as students going on to become computer scientists, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, chemical and civil engineers.

2. Choosing to become a subject matter expert as an engineer

Students also have an option of pursuing higher studies with core branches as a base degree like pursuing a Masters degree abroad (through GRE) or equivalent MTech degree in India (through GATE). It’s like a specialisation degree in a narrower field of your own interest.

Option B: BE AN ENGINEER AND PURSUE SOMETHING ELSE

You can explore and pursue a variety of career options in your life along with a BTech degree. Here is a list of some opportunities for engineers to pursue besides engineering:

1. Pursuing a career in Finance

A lot of engineers are choosing jobs in fields such as banking and finance. Students undertake research roles or opt to pursue specialised courses such as CFA or CFP with BTech. Some campuses are even offering electives related to these fields.

2. Pursuing an MBA

With a background in technology, engineers even go on to apply to management programs through CAT in India and through GMAT for universities abroad.

3. Becoming an administrator

Engineers can also opt to appear for the UPSC or state level exams and get selected into Indian Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS, etc.) after graduation.

4. Becoming an entrepreneur

Startups are booming in India and many engineers are starting their entrepreneurial journey after BTech. It is common to see friends coming together and starting up with many campuses having incubation centres and activities to give exposure to students.

5. Becoming a research graduate

Some engineers also choose to pursue research in pure science fields like Physics and Maths.

6. Undertaking a teaching profession

Engineers sometimes also choose to become dedicated teachers to train future BTech aspirants or join engineering colleges as professors after higher studies.

7. Joining the entertainment industry

Engineers can also join the arts fields like movies etc. as sound engineers or by becoming directors, actors or actresses or by undertaking event management.

8. Pursuing other fields

Apart from the above mentioned fields, engineers also pursue careers in other diverse fields such as agriculture, energy and climate management, biomedical sector, gemology, management consulting, space technology and so on.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OR BENEFITS OF ENGINEERING

1. Pursuing a BTech is not as taxing or demanding as some other fields and gives ample time to explore other interests

2. There are many choices for colleges to pursue engineering

3. Learning critical thinking and logical thinking and problem solving skills

4. Contributing to Indian development for the future with projects, construction, taking part in the technology revolution etc.

At Mentor and Mom, we feel choosing engineering is a safe option to become a graduate. You can then choose your path as you wish, which is many times not that easy with other preparation and courses.
