What are some major distractions and obstacles during JEE and NEET preparation?

Updated: Sep 22

While students transition from children to teenagers, there are major distractions in their lives. We all need to understand that these may come as an obstacle in their growth journey and may have negative consequences on them.

1. Physique and looks

Teenagers become conscious of their looks, skin colour, hair and physique. Although this issue is not discussed much, it shifts their focus from studies or skills. Because of this, a child suffers from an inferiority complex and tends to focus on unscientific diets and advice to start gymming. They need to understand that physical fitness and well-being are important, but they shouldn’t be the focus of JEE and NEET preparation. Parents need to improve their children's self-confidence, which can help them grow well.

2. Affairs and commitment

Attraction between boys and girls is very common while growing up. A good friendship is healthy if there are no lies spoken to parents. If it becomes demanding and time-consuming, the whole focus shifts from studying and preparation. All unsafe practices should be avoided. A youngster should be careful about their friend circle and attractions and limit interactions if they have a negative impact on growth.

3. Friends and outings

Children enjoy being newly given freedom after 10th boards, and often, they cannot understand the priorities of outings. Attending birthday celebrations, matches, and weekend picnics can derail the focus from preparation and should be limited.

4. Addictions and a comfortable lifestyle

Sometimes, teenagers are attracted to unhealthy habits such as smoking, vaping, alcohol and drugs, which can also be due to bad influence. Such activities put their life in danger and hinder their ability to stay alert. Children should be counselled about the ill effects of addictions by parents so that they don’t come under peer pressure to consume it.

5. Mobile, iPads and social networking

Children and their parents should not be tempted to buy new models of phones and other gadgets like iPads without need. Once given, it gradually leads to lots of social media surfing and removes focus from studies and preparation.

We have noticed that parents play a crucial role in all the above situations. Good communication with children and taking out quality time for such communication is very important. Parents should make a conscious effort to identify these issues as soon as possible and resolve them with their children. Help from mentors and teachers should be taken whenever needed.
