Compounding of habits from toddlers to teens - Part II - A suggestion for parents

Updated: Oct 16, 2022

Here, in the picture, some segregated items are kept nicely, one box full of erasers, some Lego big pieces, all kinds of wheels, and Lego men’s heads.

Investing in building certain essential habits in toddlers or children in middle school may give higher returns during teens. As we know, small children have lots of time available and are full of energy. We need to channel their energy into practical, simple, and exciting habits where they remain occupied and happy. They apply these habits when they grow up and are satisfied with their journey. Some suggestions which we have followed are:

1. Start early by playing one set of simple indoor games like carrom board,🎲chess, zero-katta, ludo, and playing cards regularly to connect with them. Keep variety and spend undivided time with them. They will know how to spend time on holidays even without going to malls and markets. They will start playing with friends later and develop enjoyment with simple things in life.

2. Start with simple outdoor games like pakdam-pakdai, bat ball 🏏🛝🏀⚽️, badminton, etc. regularly. Children don’t expect costly games. They are more than happy with our presence with them. Later they learn to play with friends. Buy relatively cost-friendly toys and keep a variety as children quickly get bored from any games. They grow up as physically active teens.

3. Develop the habit of organizing things early

Keep their toys and games in cupboards🗄and racks, and let them keep them back after playing. Let them segregate also. Provide then colorful containers. They will learn to organize their toys, stationery, and clothes later. This way, they learn to manage things, discipline, and enjoy authority. It keeps them occupied. Provide them separately clean dusting clothes etc.

4. Limit the screen time for television and mobile games.📱Select 1-2 hours of light entertainment programs on TV channels daily. Don’t subscribe to horror or violent shows. Don’t give mobile phones while feeding them when they are having their meals. Be their role model. Doing this will avoid future screen addiction.

5. Start with some simple weekly activities like a small tree plantation🪴 in a pot or if you have a garden, bring them a garden set and let them water the plants. You can visit the beach and parks and plan a mini picnic. They come closer to nature. They become calmer and learn to respect Mother Earth 🌍. They know to remain away from the noise of malls and gaming zones.

Please keep this important thing in mind.

Don’t mix playing time with educational toys. For example, we visit gardens and start asking for different colors or shapes. Let them play peacefully and enjoy it. Sometimes too much learning is boring, and children start avoiding regular studies.

Start with your toddler and see the magic of compounding with the teenager.

To be continued…😊🌸
