Why is “SMART work” and goal setting necessary during JEE/NEET preparation?

It’s said that smart work is equally important, along with hard work during JEE and NEET preparation. We have written certain “SMART” ways here to understand the preparation for the examination.

1. S - Strategic planning for the entire preparation

It’s very important to understand the plan and preparation strategy for the next two years in a nutshell and the difference between JEE/NEET preparation and board preparation in the beginning. All three subjects should be given equal time distribution. Be specific about the number of hours to study every day, the total topics to be covered, the books/ study material to follow, and the daily routine from the beginning.

2. M - Measurable daily goals

Studies for each day can be planned and measured. At the end of the day, or week, or month, time should be taken out to judge and assess the progress made. Measure the number of questions attempted weekly, topics covered in a month, etc. Marks in mock exams and the number of silly/conceptual mistakes are important things that can be measured. By measuring, effort should be made to improve from the previous day's preparation.

3. A - Achievable goals should be there

Assessing your capacity and setting achievable goals should be planned. The capacity can be improved gradually. For example, if a student can sit for 2  hours at a stretch, it is advisable to sit that much only. Gradually, this can be increased by 10 minutes or so every week. Another example is if someone can do 30 questions daily, do that much and gradually increase numbers by 5-10 per week. If we make our goals much more than our capacity, we may feel sad when we do not achieve those goals.

4. R - Relevant study materials

It is really important to understand the relevant study material and books. Your coaching and board teachers are the best guides to enquire and follow the material and books. Unnecessarily doing the advanced level of books doesn’t help many times. Similarly, missing out on basic books does much harm to the preparation.

5. T - Timely interventions are important

It is good to approach teachers timely for your doubts. You must also approach your parents when you face stressful situations, do not do well, or want to buy books. Seeking out help in a timely manner helps, while a slow approach creates backlogs and adds to the problems.

So strategic, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely goals should be planned from the beginning to improve your preparation outcomes. Take the help of parents, teachers and mentors whenever needed.
