Dear parents, do you know your child maybe facing these non-academic pressures? (Part 1)

In general, pressure is high when students are preparing for competitive exams like JEE/ NEET as they easily get affected by everybody's opinion.

How can parents help them?

Though academic pressure is the main pressure a child faces, we discuss certain non-academic pressure faced by children.

1. Body shaming

A child undergoes hormonal changes due to teenage and this time coincides with JEE/ NEET preparation. Many children who are still short in stature, have become obese or have some other issues feel under pressure to look better due to comparisons with peers around. Parents can help them by helping to improve their self esteem and overcoming any insecurities.

2. Comparing socioeconomic status

This comparison includes comparing things like the type of mobile other students are carrying or the dressing sense of other students etc which may bother your child. Giving love, affection and caring for your child helps improve confidence and overcome these kinds of comparisons.

3. Bullying by others

Some students are very simple and introverted and are bullied by other children who are of the street smart kind. Even sincere students are bullied by other children and teased for studying more. They are pressured to indulge in addictive activities etc. as well. This can create a huge sense of inferiority complex in them. Keeping in touch and improving self confidence can help in these situations.

4. Speaking a different language

As students from various backgrounds and various boards come under one roof, it’s common for some students, especially from state board backgrounds, to feel inferior to others if they are unable to speak English or have lesser exposure to other activities.

5. Inability to make new friends/feeling left out

Many students form groups with people or friends from their community, previous school etc. and there are few students who feel left out and unable to make new friends. Simply advising children to focus more on studies and ignoring these things or gradually developing friendships can help them a lot.

There are many hidden insecurities and non-academic challenges faced by a student and with good effective communication with children, parents can be of great help in overcoming mental stress.
