Are you worried about increased screen time during your JEE and NEET preparation?

It has been commonly seen that although offline classes have started, students are using online resources, like using computers for preparation, as they did during the lockdown period.

There are certain disadvantages for students during JEE and NEET preparation if they are utilizing most of their time studying on laptop or mobile. We tell you the reasons for increased screen time and suggest ways to reduce your screen time.

1. You see video lectures on YouTube everyday.

Unable to understand a few concepts in class, you may be tempted to refer to videos available online. This can become a common cause for your distraction as well and you might open some other videos and waste some time. If you are enrolled in offline classes and pay full attention to your lectures, your understanding will improve and requirement for YouTube lectures will reduce. If you haven’t understood the class lecture, refer to the textbook first. Once in a while and for some topics, it is alright to refer to YouTube but not as a routine. Lectures, notes and modules/textbooks should always be the primary source.

2. You attempt online test and keep them as PDF

Take print out of important tests from classes, manage print outs and do proper test analysis. If required write down your concepts and mark your doubts on them. It will be useful later and you will remember your mistakes better if you note them down and write down solutions to the tricky questions

3. Assignment in PDF form

Similar to tests, many students attempt assignments also in the PDF form and then are unable to analyze or discuss later on in the classes or with the teachers. If not the whole assignment, at least write down/print out difficult questions and then solve and discuss the same.

4. Books are in PDF form

You don’t have books in the physical form and are trying to refer to them online. Sometimes this approach is fine but keep all basic books as hard copy, print out if possible, and refer to them and write on them if needed.

5. Making short notes as PDF

With technology advancements, students are writing short notes digitally or referring to other student's notes digitally. It should not be done on a regular basis.

So paying full attention during lecture, writing difficult questions in a notebook, taking printouts of important tests and assignments and keeping hard copies of important books will reduce your screen time and help you prepare better. Last but not the least, manage and limit your WhatsApp time also for discussion of concepts/doubts/tests with friends.

Friendly tip - One trick that helps in reducing screen time and increasing focus is not having the option to check your phone when you are studying or preparing. You can do this by either switching off your phone while studying or activating modes such as Zen Mode (you can only receive calls in this mode).

Good luck!!
