How do some active efforts help achieve better results during JEE/NEET preparation?

Writer: Monika MittalMonika Mittal

The preparation method for JEE/NEET differs from that for school, Class X or Class XII. Although the syllabus for Class XII and JEE/NEET overlap significantly and the rest of the preparation is similar, there is a difference in how one should approach questions. It is recommended that students put in active efforts and understand concepts instead of only passively listening to lectures.

We highlight some of the important things that you should keep in mind:

1. Active preparation versus passive participation

Often,  a student passively listens to lectures in coaching classes, and if they cannot understand any topic, they take the help of other recorded lectures. They rely mainly on teachers to understand concepts. Active preparation, where students read the concepts on their own and from the book or material, is very important. The books or material should be referred to as suggested by the respective classes and teachers. This improves understanding of concepts and helps build confidence.

2. Trying difficult questions on your own

Students shouldn’t leave out the difficult concepts and questions for the teachers to solve. All things may not always be spoon-fed. Involvement and an active approach of the student matters. A student should always try to solve the questions on their own or go through the concepts again before asking their doubts or questions from the teachers. Regular practice and doubt-solving are essential parts of preparation, and solving as many questions yourself as possible is the best way to prepare. However, this should only be done once an honest attempt is made to solve the question.

3. Finding time for self-study

Students should understand that their own effort is the main driver for their success and results. Their parents, teachers, and friends are there to guide them and help them along the way. Many students are busy attending full-day classes from college, coaching and extra tuition classes. It is really important to understand the power of self-study from the beginning. A good daily timetable should be prepared to optimise the time utilisation for self-study.

4. Taking up responsibility and ensuring discipline in your daily schedule

Consistency in schedule and practice is a requirement for getting good results. Regularly attending lectures to cover topics is a good way to streamline your preparation. If there is difficulty managing the timetable, identify what is more beneficial to you and plan accordingly.

5. Self-care for good health and sleep

Understanding healthy eating and sleeping habits for good physical and mental health is equally important. Though every parent tries their best to provide nutritious food and a healthy study environment, it is equally important to be understood by the student preparing for the competitive exams to get the best results. The help of counsellors can be taken if difficulties are faced.
