How can parents be helpful to their children during JEE and NEET preparation?

Two or more years of JEE and NEET preparation are very important but stressful. We give a few simple yet effective tips on how parents can be little proactive and provide support to their child during this stressful journey.

1. As parents, be willing to support your children even if you put them in the best coaching classes

Putting your children in the best coaching classes is no guarantee for good results. It is better if parents ask their children regularly if they are able to keep up with the pace as the syllabus is vast.

2. Understand that your child may have conceptual problems and be unable to understand despite putting lots of time for studying

Many children spend a lot of time studying but unless the concepts are clear, applying these concepts to application based questions in JEE and NEET is difficult. You need to make sure that your children are understanding the concepts and if not, discuss with teachers or mentors and help them.

3. Parents should encourage children to ask doubts to teachers

Many times students are in a new setting and environment in coaching classes and are afraid to ask questions and doubts from teachers. They may also feel inferior to others for having those doubts. Parents must always encourage the child for ask questions to teachers.

4. Be a friend to your child and do not put a lot of pressure

JEE or NEET coaching can be a lot of investment for the parents. However, parents should not add pressure on their children by telling them that they are not performing well . Some statements can make the child fear parents as they think their parents have spent a lot of money and they have to give returns on the investment.

5. Make sure your child is NOT getting bullied, is depressed, anxious or lonely

Preparing for competitive exams is a stressful activity with lakhs of students appearing every year. It is very important for the parents to ensure their children are not getting bullied by friends (especially if friends are taking up a lot of time to ask doubts or for discussions). Parents should also be mindful of signs of depression, anxiety or loneliness in their children during this period.

6. Parents should try and maintain a study-friendly environment at home

An environment that helps the child focus is of prime importance for good performance. Providing student friendly study rooms as far as possible is very important.

Keep a positive attitude. Your child needs your help during these trying times to help them achieve their goals and you can play an important part!!
