Do you plan to study for 10 hours but end up studying for only 6 hours?

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

In students preparing for competitive exams or any other exams, a common problem is not being efficient while studying. While a student may plan to study for 10 hours, they could end up studying only for 6 hours.

Mentor & Mom explains 5 reasons for what could be happening and suggests tips to help you become more efficient and proactive.

1. YOU FEEL CONSTANTLY UNDER PRESSURE

One reason for this problem could be that you could be feeling pressure from friends, family or teachers. You feel that you do not get appreciated despite better performance or hard work and may tend to lose worth of your efforts and give up.

Don't pay attention to negative comments. You are a superstar, trust your efforts!

2. YOU FEEL DEMOTIVATED

Another reason for the problem of inefficiency could be that you think of studying as a burden and try to finish it off as a daily activity. This can also lead to boredom and you giving up.

MM says - "KEEP YOUR DREAMS IN MIND!"

Imagine your dream college or goal and work towards it. Thinking about your goal or dream college will help you stay motivated and not lose hope. With this mindset, you will be able to complete 10 hours of study in 6 hours!

3. YOU GET DISTRACTED

Managing time and maintaining focus are very important while preparing for competitive exams or tests. You may be losing precious time because of:

  • Friend's calls

  • Whatsapp chats, Social media and Youtube

  • Online and offline games

MM says - "FOCUSED MIND ENRICHES LEARNING!"

Prioritize your study time and keep social interactions in evening or later in the day. Even 1 hour of focused study is better than 3 hours of distracted study.

4. YOU FEEL TIRED

A tired person is also not able to study for long hours and loses focus, thus becoming inefficient. While there could be other reasons for tiredness, you could be feeling tired because of:

  • Long study hours

  • Improper meal intake and sleep hours

MM says - "GOOD HEALTH = GOOD STUDIES!"

  • Fix proper meal timings and eat nutritious food

  • Drink sufficient water

  • Complete 7-8 hours of good sleep

5. YOU FEEL CONFUSED

Not planning your day could also lead to confusion and you could be spending your precious time in deciding what to study. This makes you confused and you could end up wasting time because you are unable to prioritize:

  • The subjects for a day

  • The topics for an hour

  • Which material to study

MM says - "PLAN YOUR DAY AND BE CLEAR!"

Always try to start your day with:

  • A to-do list.

  • A daily timetable

Accomplish your tasks in smaller steps.

It is also a good practice to plan your non-study hours:
