With NEET and IIT results declared, we see that many students don’t get the college of their choice.

It could happen due to too much competition or some mistakes during your preparation or exam. Whatever the outcome, we need to decide our future strategy.

We discuss these situations in the JEE and NEET context and how we can utilize them to our best advantage.

1. Taking admission in non IIT college

Admissions to non IIT colleges are done on the basis of entrance exams other than JEE Advanced. If someone couldn’t make it into the B.Tech course and wishes to take an admission to an IIT in the future, there are alternate routes like giving the GATE exam for MTech courses or doing research projects along with your own college professors or doing a PhD at IITs.

Another important thing to understand is that you should perform well to get good grades or CGPA at your college. This should be your first priority. It is also beneficial to participate in activities or take some courses (offline or online) which are not part of your core branch. You can discuss with seniors or teachers at your college.

If your college does not provide sufficient opportunities, you can also apply through lateral channels to work with good companies or teachers for internships or projects. Having a little extra edge over others from the beginning gives you lots of good opportunities later.

2. Taking admission to non MBBS courses

When scores are less, a student doesn’t get admission to a government medical college and a private MBBS course costs a bomb. Hence, many students take other parallel courses which are available through NEET marks. Common examples are BDS, Physiotherapy, Homoeopathy (BHMS), Ayurveda (BAMS), Pharmacy, Biotechnology and so on. Take out some time and assess what you think about these other branches. Understanding your subjects and doing good from day one can take you to greater heights in any of the above branches. Correct guidance and informed decision making is helpful.

3. Giving a repeat attempt

Giving a repeat attempt should be an informed decision considering all pros and cons of the same. Once decided, start preparing as early as possible. The common mistake is not attempting sufficient questions or mock tests. Another important point is to revise and prepare some weaker topics which should be done by referring books or taking help of teachers.

As we all know, our present practices are important to build our future, so start building it with an open and strong mind. Never feel low or never feel self pity. God helps those who help themselves!
