How to choose your stream after the 10th standard?

Many students and parents remain confused about making three important choices after the 10th standard results. The most important choice is about choosing the right stream. Though children of X-th standard often cannot decide about their future plans, their opinions should be taken about their likes and dislikes.

While there are many aspects that one should consider in making these choices, some factors are very important and should be considered before making a final decision.

We list some of these factors below:

1. Alignment with subjects you are good at - One good indicator of your child’s strengths and capability related to a stream is the subjects where they perform well. When they are in school or take extra subjects, they realise the subjects of their comfort. Their performance during school time and feedback from parent-teacher meetings are very helpful. This is the most common way students decide when they choose to pursue science, commerce, arts, or any other stream.

2. Alignment with interest - Another way to choose the right stream is to choose one that aligns with your child’s interest. This will ensure they study well and find the topics interesting. So children and their parents must do their research well. It is also important to understand that maintaining high fitness and regulating diet is important for some careers, such as pilots and athletes.

3. Versatility and future prospects - A key factor in choosing a stream, especially for undecided students, is the number of career options for the child once they complete their studies. For example, it is usually difficult for medical doctors to move into other fields after so many years of practice or for chartered accountants to switch to other fields after becoming experts in accounting and finance. Job prospects for the future are also important to consider.

4. Choosing one stream is better - Pursuing one stream, such as PCM, PCB or Humanities, is a slightly better decision than opting for multiple streams as it helps focus efforts and do better in one domain.

5. Focus on skills - It is possible that the child has exceptional capability for some skill, and he/she can pursue that as a career. Many students are good at sports, singing, dancing, editing, etc. An informed decision should be taken about these for enrolling after x classes. Distance learning courses can be chosen to complete formal education in such cases.

6. Future income and well-paying job - Parents see the future good income careers and enrol their children to prepare for entrance exams. For example, computer science, artificial intelligence, medical doctors, etc. If there is agreement between children and parents on this issue, then this path can be chosen.

7. Take the help of career counselling and aptitude tests - Many times, it’s really difficult to select a stream, or a child may be good in more than two streams. In such cases, help can be obtained from counsellors, and an aptitude/skill test can be helpful.

Choosing the right stream, school and coaching are very important decisions that must be made after doing research. They can make the child’s career and help them do well. Parents must make a good and informed choice and try to talk to other parents or Mentor and Mom for guidance!
