Many times during JEE/NEET, children face some issues due to the behaviour of their parents. It is important for parents and the child to understand why these problems are happening, and address them properly, as the problems can affect preparation in a bad way. In this blog, we tell you some of the main problems and the reasons why they happen:
1. Constantly advising to change the sleep and wake-up time of the child
When preparing for JEE/NEET, children have a preference to study till late at night. Parents often scold them for staying up late. It is important to understand that children might be waking up late at night to get a quiet environment and focus on their studies. If a noisy environment is there in the house, children find it difficult to concentrate. As long as the sleep time of roughly 7-8 hours is being maintained, and breakfast and other meals are not compromised, it is fine to have such a sleep schedule.
It is equally important for a child to understand that many times, the retention power reduces when staying awake until very late, and there is a tendency to eat junk food late at night. It is beneficial to try not to be awake too late and gradually change this habit over a period of a few weeks. Changing this habit may become more productive for studies and helpful for health as well. If you have a habit of sleeping in the afternoon try to gradually shift to sleeping early in the night instead. These should be sorted out with mutual respect and discussions.
2. Controlling Outdoor activities
Children like to play sports with their friends in the neighbourhood. Many times, children play cricket or football games over the weekend. During such instances, parents tell them not to waste their time during preparation. The preparation years are very hectic, and it can get boring at times. Some form of outdoor activity is a must, be it playing sports with friends, cycling, walking or running. Overdoing extra activities can affect studies and preparation. However, well-planned activities should be added to the daily schedule so that study time is not wasted. Children should also not over-exert themselves, and they should play safe and prevent injuries from happening.
3. Making comparisons due to low marks in tests
When a child scores low marks on a practice test, parents think that they are not studying enough. Another pain point in such instances is the comparison of marks with other students. While evaluating performance, all things should be considered, such as time given to review before the test, quality of sleep and sufficient nutrition before the test, conceptual and/or silly mistakes during the test, and the child's overall strength/weakness of the subject or the test topics. Analysis of the low score is most important because it will help identify the problems. Parents should help their children with test analysis.
It is better for parents to sit and discuss problems with their children. If they keep scolding or being harsh, the child might stop talking about their issues, and they will burden themselves more. If there are things that parents feel are not correct for preparation, they should figure out why the child is doing/behaving so and then find a common solution.
