Are you practicing questions correctly during your JEE/NEET preparation?

Are you getting less marks despite studying regularly?

Many students say that they study well and practice questions but are still unable to perform well in mock tests. This can also lead to low marks in the final tests. What could be the reason and how can you improve your marks?

1.Practising less number of questions

Many students study theory and revise the topics taught in the class but the total number of questions they attempt is less. On an average, solving 150-200 questions per topic (mix of easy and difficult questions) is suggested but a student should try solving at least 100 questions.

2.Leaving easier questions

Another common problem we see is that students see questions and think they are very easy and hence don’t practice such questions or try solving them only in their head or by judgement. Practicing questions in the sequence given in booklets is very important. You can leave a few questions but until you do the easy questions, attempting moderate or difficult questions will not be easy.

3.Referring solutions easily

While going through some topics and questions, students tend to refer to solutions to the practice questions and think that they have understood the method of solving. You only remember solutions to questions you solve and by referring to solutions, also do not look to creatively find an alternate way to solve the question. For every question, especially the difficult ones, you should try them at least one more time before referring to solutions.

4. Not clearing weak concepts or doubts

Another mistake students commit is that they solve questions without perfectly understanding the concepts. While avoiding silly mistakes can be done with practice, conceptual mistakes need to be avoided by understanding the concepts well by doing self study. This improves the attempts made at solving the questions. Also, take the help of teachers or mentors for the same.

5. Not practicing questions in limited time frame

When students practice at home or without a test environment, they spend more time on each question without realizing it. If you practice with a time frame in mind, you can monitor your speed and this can save time in mock tests.

The preparation of JEE/ NEET is to exercise a student’s mind to apply the concepts they have learned. Most of the time, the questions are not direct. So clear your concepts, practice more questions and make honest attempts. These steps will definitely improve your test performance!!
